Lesson: Clock Numerals
I–XII on clocks and the IIII dial convention.
Difficulty: Beginner / Intermediate · Classroom support material (not claimed as aligned to a specific state standard)
Objective
Students will map hours 1–12 to Roman numerals and explain that clock IIII is a dial convention distinct from classroom IV.
What students need to know
- Numbers 1–12
- IV and IIII as competing forms for 4
Explanation
Clock faces commonly show I through XII. Many dials use IIII for 4 even though modern canonical teaching prefers IV. Treat IIII-on-clocks as a design convention; multiple historical explanations have been proposed, and no single reason should be presented as definitive.
Examples
- 1 = I … 3 = III
- 4 = IV (canonical) / IIII (common on clocks)
- 9 = IX
- 12 = XII
Short guided practice
- Draw a clock and label hours in Roman numerals.
- Compare a photo of a clock using IIII with the canonical converter form IV.
