Roman Numeral Clock
Clock faces commonly mark hours with Roman numerals from I to XII. Many traditional dials use IIII for 4 instead of the modern canonical IV.
IIII vs IV on clocks
In modern canonical Roman numerals, 4 is written IV. On clock dials, however, IIII is a long-standing convention and still appears on many watches and public clocks. There is no single universally agreed historical explanation for why IIII became common on dials—practical casting, visual balance with VIII, and tradition are among the reasons often discussed. For conversion and encyclopedia pages on this site, the canonical form remains IV.
