Roman Numeral Dates
A Roman numeral date converts the day, month, and year into separate numerals. Clear order labeling matters as much as correct conversion—especially for tattoos and international readers.

Convert each part separately
Take a calendar date such as 8 April 2026 (2026-04-08):
- Day 8 → VIII
- Month 4 → IV
- Year 2026 → MMXXVI
Join them with a separator you choose—middle dots, bullets, spaces, or line breaks are common: VIII · IV · MMXXVI or stacked lines. Use the date converter to generate labeled formats. Year-only help is in Roman numeral years.
Order ambiguity: MM/DD versus DD/MM
The numeric date 04/07/2026 means 7 April 2026 in the United States (month/day/year) but 4 July 2026 in many other countries (day/month/year). In Roman numerals the same confusion remains if you only write IV · VII · MMXXVI without saying which is the month.
Best practice:
- State the order in plain language near the design (Month–Day–Year or Day–Month–Year).
- Prefer an unambiguous layout, such as day-month name-year in mixed form, or ISO-style year-month-day with labels.
- For tattoos, read the dedicated notes on the tattoo date converter.
Choosing a format by use case
- Weddings and invitations — elegant separators, often day · month · year; see wedding dates
- Birthdays and gifts — keep the order labeled for relatives abroad; see birthday dates
- Anniversaries — same date pattern each year; see anniversaries
- Memorials — prioritize clarity and permanence; see memorial dates
Writing individual numbers correctly still follows how to write Roman numerals and the core rules.
Months as numbers versus month names
Fully Roman dates usually number the month (1–12 → I–XII). Some designs mix a Roman day/year with a written month name (“April”) to remove ambiguity. Either approach is fine when the reader can tell which element is which.
Clock-style IIII for 4 is optional and uncommon in date tattoos; modern IV is clearer for month or day 4—see numerals on clocks for the dial tradition.
Validation checklist
- Each component decodes to the intended Arabic value.
- The year matches pages such as 2026 → MMXXVI.
- Order is labeled or otherwise unmistakable.
- Font choice keeps I, V, and X distinct at the final size.
Double-check with the decoder before engraving or printing.
