Roman Numeral Years

A Roman numeral year is simply the calendar year converted with standard I–M notation. The same form appears in film credits, cornerstones, invitations, and reference charts.

  1. Split the year into thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.
  2. Convert each place.
  3. Join the pieces.

Where year numerals appear

Years versus ordinal titles

Do not confuse a year with an ordinal after a name. Elizabeth II uses II as “the second,” not the year 2. Louis XIV uses XIV as “the fourteenth.” Super Bowl editions likewise number the game, not a calendar year—see Super Bowl numerals and royal names.

Context almost always resolves the ambiguity: a four-digit-scale numeral near © is a year; a short numeral after a personal name is an ordinal.

Range notes for years

This site converts years from 1 to 3999. That covers all modern Gregorian years people commonly look up. Years at or beyond 4000 would need extended notation described in large Roman numerals. There is no classical year “0” in Roman numeral form—see Roman numeral zero.

Full dates that include a year

When day and month are present, convert each component and label the order clearly (especially for tattoos). Guidance lives in Roman numeral dates and the specialized converters under date tools.
