Lesson: Roman Numeral Dates

Convert calendar dates with explicit MDY/DMY/YMD order.

Difficulty: Intermediate · Classroom support material (not claimed as aligned to a specific state standard)

Objective

Students will convert month, day, and year components separately and label date order clearly.

What students need to know

  • Months 1–12
  • Roman numerals through at least 31 and common years

Explanation

A Roman numeral date is three conversions: month, day, and year. Ambiguity comes from order, not from the numerals alone. Always label whether a date is month/day/year, day/month/year, or year/month/day.

Examples

  • August 8, 2026 (MDY) → VIII / VIII / MMXXVI
  • 4 July 1776 (DMY) → IV / VII / MDCCLXXVI
  • Year alone 1999 → MCMXCIX

Short guided practice

  1. Convert today’s date in MDY and DMY forms.
  2. Discuss why 04/07/2026 is ambiguous without labels.
