In some extended Roman-numeral conventions, a bar (overline) over a numeral multiplies that value by 1,000. Conventions vary by period and textbook. This site’s converters do not accept overline notation and stay within 1–3999.

What an overline can mean

Example (illustrative convention only): a V with an overline may be described as 5,000 in some teaching materials. Always check which convention a source uses. Do not enter overlines into this site’s converter.
